Logistics Network Design Support

The design of the network is the key to a successful logistics system. Since Logistics as a whole span wide and vast, it is important to bring all aspects of Logistics together during the Network Design activity.

As such, the Integrated Logistics model is best suited for Oil and Gas Logistics. Many 3rd party logistics companies sell this model, but in reality, from a project perspective, during operations, the Logistics System is still very much fragmented. Contracts, Procurement, Materials Management (inventory and inventory management), Supply Chain (Logistics Process for operations), Technology used for logistics process execution, Transportation (Vessel selection), Shipping (Customs Brokerage), Engineering, Budgeting, and Cost Control all play a part of creating a successful Logistics Network Design.

Logistics Personnel Recruitment Service

Having the right logistics professionals, especially for short-term projects is key to good project execution. The Project Manager ensures operation is managed efficiently whilst doing this at a minimal cost. This will ensure that the project is completed within the estimated time and within budget. Our goal and what we strive to achieve is to complete the project ahead of time

at a lower cost.

The logistics personnel (Drilling Material Coordinators) on

the Rig/Installation, at shore-based as well as in the main office must have the relevant qualifications and experience to ensure that they possess the Technical Competency required in order that they operate in such a way as to be in alignment with the corporate strategy, goals, and objectives.

Ultimately the DMCs should be able to execute the logistics process well thereby either reducing operating costs or maintaining high efficiency.

Logistics Audit (system, technical competency)

For routine operations, a logistics system check yearly or after every 2nd

quarter is a necessary activity for oil and gas operators. This not only

allows the operator to know if the system is working but also to know if they

are getting the best value for money by awarding the contract to the

selected 3rd party logistics company. This allows the operator to address

inefficiencies in the system and to understand if the logistics company is

operating in the most cost-effective way. It is also important to know if the

logistics personnel within the logistics team have the required technical

competencies to execute their function. Thus, a system evaluation is key in

managing operations costs and identifying cost savings opportunities.

Since the main purpose of starting a company is to make a profit,

companies are constantly trying to find ways to increase profits.

Traditionally, companies always set out to boost their marketing and

advertising campaigns to increase profits, however, whilst sales increase it

does not necessarily mean that profits have increased. In most instances, companies realize that as sales increase, the cost of sales and operating

costs also increase, showing that the company did not create the desired

profits. In recent times, companies are realizing that they can realize a

higher profit margin not by increasing sales, but by reducing operating

costs and by operating more efficiently. This is the right approach to

maximize profits, hence it is extremely important to be able to identify cost-

saving opportunities within the logistics system.

After conducting the logistics system evaluation to see if the system is

operating at optimum cost efficiency, two things must follow, those are,

firstly, if the system is not operating efficiently and not operating at

minimum cost, the focus is to identify the weaknesses within the system

and provide recommendations to strengthen the system and secondly, if

the system is operating efficiently at the minimum operating cost, look at

innovative ways that can be introduced into the system to make it better

and more efficient.

Selection of 3rd Party Logistics Companies Support

The main purpose of selecting a 3rd Party Logistics Company is for the assurance that the logistics department will function in the most efficient way. The expectation is to see a reduction in operating cost in the first instance, then maintain operating at the lowest cost in a sustainable way. In recent times specialization is the direction leading oil and gas operators are leaning towards. Large oil and gas companies have always struggled with their logistics department which resulted in high operating costs. Traditionally employees that were once valuable to the company may be transferred to the logistics department when their roles become somewhat obsolete since the company would keep the employee within the organization rather than letting them go. However, since the employee is not Logistics Professional, they are not able to fully grasp the principles that guide the logistics system.

Additionally, Companies who engage in corporate re-structuring realize that the company will operate more smoothly by them focusing on their core services. For some of these reasons, companies have decided to outsource their logistics function to companies that specialize in oil and gas logistics. By doing this, the oil and gas operator will be able to focus more on manufacturing which would justify outsourcing the logistics function. While this is the right decision, due to the amount of 3rd Party Logistics Companies emerging, the selection of the right company is key.

Even though the operator may be outsourcing the logistics function, there must be personnel within the company with the right qualifications and experience who will be able to systematically select the right logistics company. Finally, it is important for them to understand all aspects of the logistics function and be able to measure the company's performance by having the right Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to be able to determine if the particular company is giving you Value for Money (VM).
